prevent this from happening by telling your coworkers you do not want to hear negative comments made behind your back. if they choose to tell you before you can stop them, you will approach the person unit of a hospital. an intramuscular injection (im) was given incorrectly to one of the patients. the injection site could be seen at the edge of his muscle instead of in the belly of the muscle where the best absorption would take place. as the newest nurse on the floor, i was stated by my peers as the probable suspect. i knew how to give this type of injection. i could not ignore the accusation. if i did, i felt my nursing skills would always be suspect. i copied instructions and a diagram of how to give an im injection and shared it with the nurses who i thought were spreading the rumor. my strategy worked. i did not hear anything about it. my nursing skills were not questioned again. another way i could have resolved this issue, would have been to go to my nursing supervisor. she could have talked with any nurses who recentlyave this patient an im injection. even if she never found out who gave that first injection, she could have reviewed correct im injection techniques with all the nurses on the staff. that way no one would be singled out, and this event may have been prevented in the future. consider the nature of the complaint before deciding whether or not to ignore criticism. if it is an attack on your personal choices or family and friends, it is probably better to ignore the criticism if you can. if your nursing skill or judgment is being criticized, deal called me to her office. when i arrived, dr. d was sitting in a chair staring down at his feet. “dr. d says you promised to stay at his office until he got a replacement for you.” the hr woman said. “that is not true.” i responded emphatically my angry eyes piercing the top of dr. d's bald head. i wanted to call him a liar, but not knowing where this conversation was going, i did not want to make things worse for myself. “well, i expect you to come back to dr. d's clinic two mornings a week until he can find another nurse practiceer or do not bother to come in tomorrow,” was the hr woman's ultimatum. in other words, i either returned part time to this clinic or i lost my job. dr. d never looked up as i walked out the door. i was mad. i yelled. i sacrificed. i ranted. i raged. i could not leave my job at this time. i did not have a choice. i had to go back. on my way home, i stopped at a florist shop to pay a bill. as i walked out the door, the florist handed me a red rose. something about his kind gesture made me take a different perspective on my dilemma. since dr. d was not my collaborating physician anymore, he no longer had control over me. i was just like any other specialist who worked at his office. when i showed up at dr. d's clinic, i dressed in my best suit with my hair in a french twist. all registered nurses and nurse practitioners called the doctors “doctor”, followed by the first letter of their last name.
